For teachers

Lateness, no-shows and class time

Lateness is measured from the scheduled start to the first time you join the classroom. The classroom opens 10 minutes before the start. You and the student each have a 5-minute grace period.

If you're late

  • 6 to 10 minutes (minor): for every 2 such times with the same student, the student gets 1 bonus hour after an operations review. OTO funds this hour; your pay isn't reduced for it.
  • 11 to 15 minutes (major): the student gets 1 bonus hour each time. It is deducted from your pay at your own hourly rate for that class's tier, and it is 3 points.
  • Not joined after 15 minutes: the class is cancelled as an instructor no-show. The student's hour returns with 1 bonus hour, deducted from your pay as above, and it is 8 points.

If you're salaried, pay deductions apply as far as your contract provides.

If the student is late or absent

  • A student who joins late keeps the class until its scheduled end; you teach from when they join.
  • A student who hasn't joined 20 minutes after the start is marked a no-show automatically, and the class ends.
  • For a student no-show, or a student cancellation less than 8 hours before the start, you're paid 50% of the hour.
  • After 2 student no-shows in a row, the student's future classes are paused while support tries to reach them. If they aren't reached within 7 days, their classes are released and those slots open up again in your availability.

Teaching time

  • Each class is a 60-minute slot, and you teach at least 50 minutes of it. If the student joins late, the minimum is from their join to the scheduled end (for example, 40 minutes when they're 20 minutes late).
  • A class shorter than its minimum is flagged for review by operations; your pay is never changed automatically because of it. Pay counts at most 60 minutes.
  • You can extend a class by 5 minutes at a time, up to 30 minutes, only if neither you nor the student has another class booked then. Extended minutes are never paid.
